Local Hero Weeks

For the Capital of Culture year 2010, one city in the Ruhr metropolis was at the center of the celebrations under the term “Local Hero”. In the anniversary year of the Industrial Culture Route, the 27 anchor points will each enjoy this spotlight for one week. Sometimes it's just one location, sometimes multiple locations share the spotlight in a week. What they all have in common is that they welcome visitors with a varied program of special tours and hands-on activities.

In the warm months, locations with suitable space will organize picnics in cooperation with the RVR. Guests bring their own picnic and are welcomed by the local hero with a special view and an accompanying program.

Here is an overview of the planned Local Hero campaigns!

OVERVIEW LOCAL HERO WEEKS 2024

Thursday, May 30, 2024: Family Day
The Local Hero Week at Zollverein starts on May 30th with a family day. The world heritage site gets into the party mood indoors and outdoors with a program tailored to children and families - including clowns and balloon modelling. There is also free entry to the Ruhr Museum, the Portal of Industrial Culture and the Participatory Zeche as well as free guided tours of the monument trail. To be seen publicly for the first time on this occasion: the new 360-degree film and an exhibition of the best images from the “Room for the Future” photo competition to mark 25 years of the Industrial Culture Route.

From May 30th: Exhibition for the photo competition “Room for the Future”
How has the region changed since the Industrial Heritage Route was founded? And how do people perceive industrial culture? These were questions that formed the basis of a participatory photo competition that the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR) announced in collaboration with the Ruhr Museum via the FUNKE Media Group. We were looking for individual photos or series of up to eight images from the last 25 years that deal with industrial culture and the people in the Ruhr area. A team of employees from the RVR and the Ruhr Museum selected the best images, which will be shown from May 30 to November 10, 2024 on the 24-meter level of the Ruhr Museum and in the RVR headquarters.

Friday, May 31, 2024: Dance party in the Erich Brost Pavilion
The Route Industrial Culture anniversary is celebrated at lofty heights: on May 31st, the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR) is organizing a dance party in the Erich Brost Pavilion. With panoramic views of the Ruhr area.

Saturday, June 1, 2024: extra shift
This year, ExtraSchicht will take place on June 1st (not the last Saturday in June as usual) as part of Local Hero Week. As an exception, some ExtraSchicht highlights can also be admired in the outdoor area on the days before and after (from May 30th to June 2nd): for example DUNDU, the flower meadow by the Illuminist, a nostalgic carousel and the Pani projections by Leucht -Plant.

HERE it goes to extra shift -Program at Zollverein

Sunday, June 2, 2024: World Heritage Day
The Local Hero Week ends on June 2nd with World Heritage Day, the open day of the German UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which this year has the motto “Discover and experience diversity”. This time, the discussion event in the round thickener of the coal washing facility is dedicated to the future of industrial culture.

HERE it goes to the Local Hero program customs union!

This year, the Citizens' Brunch will be held for the first time in Nordsternpark, one of the major anchor points of the route, as part of the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the Route of Industrial Heritage. Thanks to the support of the Gelsenkirchen City Marketing Company, up to 100 beer tent sets are available for the event on Nordsternplatz. Interested citizens, clubs or companies can book a table for up to 50 people for 10 euros each. There is a bouncy castle for the little ones and, to mark the 10th anniversary, guests will be entertained musically by the Speedos.

The Speedos – The mobile band (https://thespeedos.de/)

As in previous years, this year's breakfast will be for a good cause. With the proceeds from the rented tables and the sponsors' contributions, the organizers would like to support the great work of the Girls' Center eV Gelsenkirchen. The Girls' Center has made it its mission to advise and support girls and young women in crisis situations.

Forming, melting, casting, cleaning – the central work steps of casting have been available to experience in the LWL Museum Henrichshütte Hattingen since September 1997. In the Hattinger Museum of the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Association (LWL), the show foundry teaches museum guests the principle of molding and the fascination of casting. Experiments are carried out with aluminum in an electric melting furnace and with bronze and iron in a coke oven. Models made of wood and molds made of sand are created by hand. “At the hut” is being poured again, although no longer in tons, but only in kilograms.

The show foundry is open from 11.00 a.m. to 16.00 p.m. The first casting is around 13.00 p.m. and between 13.30:14.45 p.m. and XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. you can experience all the steps from the molding of the model to the casting.

Cost: Museum entry

Coal is a thing of the past – culture and sustainable development in the Ruhr area and the Rhenish district

Cooperation events with the Heinrich Böll Foundation NRW, the ZeitreiseStrom Museum and the LVR Industrial Museum.

The structural change regions of the Ruhr area and Rheinisches Revier should be designed and developed sustainably in the future. So far, the focus has been primarily on modern technologies, innovative companies and research, leisure and adventure landscapes from which value creation and jobs are to be created. In contrast, social and everyday issues and the role of culture in structural change are less discussed.

We ask: What contribution can culture make in regions of structural change? Can people in the Ruhr area and Rhenish district learn from each other?

Open Monument Day®

Monuments are witnesses to the past stories of their residents and builders. Under the motto “Truth Signs. “Contemporary Witnesses of History”, the Day of the Open Monument® invites you to search for traces and to determine the history and stories of the monument. Landmarks are not just famous sights and landmarks that represent an important historical event or shape the cityscape. Every monument, even if it appears more modest, can become an important symbol, a sign of a place. On this day, too, our focus is on the listed substation.

from 13 a.m.: Birthday picnic the Industrial Heritage Route: With free birthday cupcakes, drinks and giveaways from the route (while stocks last).

Special tour of the industrial landscape

Built in 1928, the Recklinghausen substation stands in the middle of a landscape that has been completely changed by industrialization. The aim of our tour is to explore these. We start in the museum, then go to the Emscher and the Recklinghausen city harbor and finally look at the sewage treatment plant on the Emscher. After about 90 minutes we return to the substation.

DID YOU KNOW: THE HISTORY OF THE GERMAN MINING MUSEUM

SOON 100: THE GERMAN MINING MUSEUM BOCHUM THROUGH THE TIMES

Dörthe Schmidt, MA, exhibition and mediation

Every cell phone, every vehicle, every data processing system - almost every object is based on raw materials that are obtained through mining. Mining is the original production of our modern world - and all of this is on display in the German Mining Museum Bochum. The museum originally emerged from a manageable “teaching and display collection” for miners in the Ruhr area. The house is now considered one of the largest mining museums in the world with a collection that not only contains over a quarter of a million objects, but is also dedicated to all forms of raw material extraction. With its outstanding research areas, the house is part of the Leibniz Association. This “did you know” lecture is dedicated to the history of the museum, which was founded in 1930.

12:15 p.m. FLASH WEATHER AND COAL DUST – MINE ACCIDENT IN THE GERMAN COAL MINING

Dr. Michael Farrenkopf, Montan History Documentation Center (montan.dok)

Mine accidents were devastating events in mining history - and they remain so worldwide today. In the German hard coal mining industry, which has now ended, its occurrence and catastrophic dimensions initially grew steadily in parallel with the industrial boom. It was only around 1900 that it was possible to slowly limit the risk through system-technical and operational measures. Mining accidents could also be social events or even turning points for the security regime. This can be illustrated by the firedamp and coal dust explosion that cost the lives of at least 08 miners at the Lothringen colliery in Bochum-Gerthe on August 1912, 112. Even Emperor Wilhelm II went to the scene of the accident at the time to not only demonstrate compassion - as an oil painting by the artist Theodor Rocholl in the German Mining Museum Bochum, Leibniz Research Museum for Georesources, in the tour “Hard Coal. Motor of industrialization” clarifies.

Fortunately, we are not the only ones using the site of the former Altenberg zinc factory, as the industrial museum is still closed due to extensive renovation work. But the work of the Altenberg socio-cultural center and its numerous associations, with whom we share the almost 3-hectare site, continues unabated. Together we are putting together a varied program: guided tours of the site, archive films on the history of the site and the beginnings of the Altenberg Initiative Group (now the Altenberg socio-cultural center), stands and hands-on activities by the associations, as well as current information on the construction site and the planned new exhibition in the rolling hall. Martha and the Musikmalocher and Sebastian Dey and the criminal organization will play rousing music with cult status in the factory yard. The route will also be providing a birthday picnic. The Association for Contemporary Art / Ruhrgebiet eV is opening its exhibition and offering guided tours of paintings by Christoph Breitmar, Heike Kelter and Eva Sjödal-Essén, as well as drawings by Luise von Rohden.
