Symposium in the salt warehouse of the Hansa coking plant
“When work makes the city!”
transformation of industrial spaces
On May 29, 2024, the Industrial Heritage Route celebrated its 25th anniversary with more than 600 guests from all over Europe at the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the following months, the various sites and networks of industrial heritage were the focus of the anniversary events throughout the RVR area and gave an impression of the diversity and remarkable growth of the once niche sector of industrial heritage.
In this respect, the IBA Emscher Park future program is generally seen as a catalyst for decisive developments in the Ruhr region. As a result, industrial culture has developed enormous dynamism both in the region and in other parts of Germany and Europe and has driven forward important land transformations.
Today, cities are constantly being renegotiated. Growing competition for space between housing, green, industrial and commercial areas pose challenges for the actors involved, as do resource shortages and the demands of modern mobility. Working environments are changing fundamentally, and commercial locations must respond to new quality requirements. Social planning aspects will also become more important. The symposium marking the end of the 25th anniversary of the Industrial Heritage Route is dedicated to these topics. The three-day event with impulses, discussions and tours is organized by the Ruhr Regional Association in cooperation with Baukultur NRW, the Foundation for Industrial Monument Preservation and Historical Culture and the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
