RENEGADE collective in the washroom – Hip Hop History and Industrial Culture
The full-length hip-hop performance CHROMSCHWARZ brings drama, dance, rap, graffiti and music from the Ruhr area scene together for the first time in the Kokerei Hansa on stage. An ensemble of more than 15 people stages the Dortmund monument and turns its washroom into a performance venue, bringing together voices, atmospheres and stories from the past and present of the Ruhr area with its industrial and hip-hop culture. In the hip hop performance CHROMSCHWARZ, hip hop artists from all over the world, Dortmund and the Ruhr area work together professionally - from breaking, hip hop dance to rap and beatmaking to graffiti. In the seven chapters Soot, Currywurst, Ruhr Beat, Chrome Black, White Gold, Mixed Bag and Futura, the staging between spectacle and thoughtfulness deals with hip hop from or in the Ruhr area and with different perspectives on history and homeland.
Hansa coking plant and Dortmund as venues
The premiere of the CHROMSCHWARZ production will be celebrated on Saturday, August 5th at 20 p.m. at the Hansa coking plant, which, as an industrial monument, provides the right setting, authentic inspiration as well as sounds and scenery for the production. Dortmund and the Ruhr area have a special tradition when it comes to hip hop. Between deindustrialization and structural change, empty factory buildings and industrial wasteland, a number of graffiti artists (chrome-black pictures as an internationally known feature of Dortmund graffiti culture) and rap crews (Too Strong, RAG, Krupplyn, etc.) developed their specific style here from the late 80s , which did not correspond to the stereotypes of the American role models, but produced its own identity and language.
