Remediation work on the Haniel spoil heap
Extensive construction work will begin on the slag heap plateau on February 9, 2026. The aim is to redesign the plateau, improve drainage, and make the area even more attractive and safer for visitors in the long term. The work is expected to last until September 2026.
Hiking and mountain biking routes are largely restricted, and the work area at Haldenkopf is expected to remain completely closed until the end of May 2026. Following this, drainage work will take place in the area of the access road to the spoil heap; however, access to the Stations of the Cross and the summit cross will generally remain possible.
The construction work also includes the redesign of the artwork "Totems," which is slated to return to the spoil heap plateau—though not in the exact same location as before, but adapted to the new design and use of the area. The amphitheater on the spoil heap, which had already been partially dismantled, has now been completely demolished and is no longer accessible to the public.
In the long term, the spoil heap is to be cleared after all work on the Regional Association Ruhr (RVR). The aim is to make the site permanently safe and attractively accessible for visitors.
