Show run in the compressor hall of the Hansa coking plant in Dortmund

During the guided tours of the Hansa coking plant next weekend, how the compressors work will be explained. One of the once steam-powered gas compressors can be admired in the exhibition.

When the Hansa coking plant went into operation in 1928, it was already possible to develop long-distance gas from the coke oven gas produced during the coking process. Long-distance gas was in high demand; it found its way into private households, into gas-processing companies, into towns and communities. However, other important raw materials were also produced during the coking process, which were primarily used as preliminary products by the chemical industry. During the weekend tours of the historic Hansa coking plant, visitors get an insight into this product division of the coking plant, which is located along the Weißen Straße of the coking plant parallel to the black side of the coal.

At full production, the Hansa coking plant produced 2,2 million cubic meters of coke oven gas per day, which was then processed. Five huge and valuable compressors under one roof converted the coke oven gas into long-distance gas by compression, which could be fed into the pipeline network. The guided tours explain how the compressors work and one of the once steam-powered gas compressors can be admired in the exhibition.
Before the coke oven gas was fed in, it had previously been cleaned of sulphur, naphaltin and benzene. These substances as well as tar, ammonia and light oil were also marketed and sold. Countless by-products of coal found their way into plastics, medicines and dyes, among other things.
