Daily pictures for the district: Helmut Orwat's press photographs

Helmut Orwat shaped the Ruhr area for three decades with impressive press photographs. The exhibition “Daily Pictures for the Revier” in the LWL Museum Schiffhebewerk Henrichenburg runs until March 4, 2024 and provides a unique insight into Orwat’s work from 1960 to 1992.
As a freelance press photographer, Orwat delivered up to 15 photographs a day to the local editorial team of the Ruhr Nachrichten. These document not only everyday life, but also formative events such as demonstrations, strikes and election campaigns.
The focus is on people “next door” - authentic and diverse. Orwat's photographs not only show the large industrial buildings, but also life along the canals, grazing sheep in front of industrial buildings and the changes in the cities in the Ruhr area. He captures the everyday with a keen sense of the everyday He introduced drinking halls, weekly markets, smock aprons, bonanza bikes, rabbit breeders and horse racing - scenes that have often disappeared from the street scene today.
In addition to impressions of the Ruhr area, Orwat also portrayed stars and celebrities such as Götz George, Heinrich Böll and Helmut Kohl, thus creating a diverse range of social images. Visitors to the exhibition experience a journey through time through the Ruhr area, captured through Orwat's lens.

A special highlight is the tour by Helmut Orwat himself on February 4.2.2024th, 14 at 00:XNUMX p.m.
