German Mining Museum Bochum

The German Mining Museum Bochum (DBM) is by far the largest museum of its kind. Thanks to its extensive mining history collection, it offers an impressive view of global mining history.

Since 2019, this has been illustrated as part of a modern museum concept that combines multimedia mediation stations and some "heavy" originals. It was founded on April 1, 1930 and received its representative appearance in 1935 through the design of the industrial architect Fritz Schupp. The head frame of the Germania colliery has become an icon of the city of Bochum. As part of the Leibniz Association for Georesources, the DBM is also dedicated to research.
The German Mining Museum Bochum offers visitors an exciting permanent exhibition with four tours that provide information on the topics of hard coal, mining, mineral resources and art. Over 3 exhibits are presented at various information stations. Interactive games, multimedia mediation points, a children's track and hands-on exhibits are available to convey the content in a sustainable manner. The permanent exhibition in the museum is accompanied by four tours, namely hard coal, mining, mineral resources and art. Visitors* also have the opportunity to pay a visit to a mine that is modeled on a real underground mine. At a depth of 000 meters you get an insight into the hard coal and iron ore mining. A ride on the conveyor cage in the ropeway simulator and a wonderful all-round view from the headframe are also possible. In addition, the museum offers guided tours and workshops for both children and adults. The museum offer is supplemented by special exhibitions.

In 1930, the Westfälische Berggewerkschaftskasse and the city of Bochum founded the German Mining Museum (DBM). In order to build it, the halls of the disused slaughterhouse were structurally redesigned between 1935 and 1941. Finally, in 1973, the DBM got its trademark, a headframe. In 2009, the "Black Diamond" was inaugurated as an extension, the black facade of which symbolizes a section through a yellow-orange tunnel system. There, the DBM+ houses special exhibitions and a collection of depictions of Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners.

Since the summer of 2019, the German Mining Museum (DBM) has been shining in new splendor - both in terms of content and appearance. The demanding renovation of the house took three years and the result is four attractive tours that offer visitors more than 3.000 different exhibits. The overall goal of the DBM is to convey its research results in an exciting and informative way. A team of curators, together with exhibition designers and museum educators, has developed new content and modern forms of presentation such as interactive games, multimedia stations and hands-on exhibits. These deal primarily with the topics of German hard coal, people and mining, natural resources as well as art and culture.

The mining museum in Bochum is an exciting museum for the whole family.
