Linden Brewery Unna

The Lindenbrauerei was one of the most traditional breweries in the area and is now a vibrant cultural and educational center. It houses the Center for Information and Education (zib), the Culture and Communication Center Lindenbrauerei e. V., the free theater Narrenschiff, the workshop in the district of Unna and the health center in the district of Unna. The Center for International Light Art in Unna enjoys an international reputation. The top-class collection with works by James Turrell, Mischa Kuball and Jan van Munster, among others, is located below ground in the brewery's former cooling vaults. Visitors can explore the permanent and temporary exhibitions through guided tours – there are special offers for the youngest. Above ground, cultural events of all kinds and the Schalander pub complete the anchor point.

Coal, steel and beer: The "typical triad of the district" is based on success stories such as that of the Linden brewery. What began as a family business in 1859 has developed into a brewery with a legendary reputation. In 1979 the productive end of the Lindenbrauerei Unna was decided, the last beer rolled through the gate in the same year, and the city of Unna took over the building complex. A little later, the supporting association Lindenbrauerei eV, an association of many artists, initiatives and committed individuals, was founded with the aim of setting up a socio-cultural center in the old brewery. The association's negotiations with the city of Unna, which owns the site, took a long time, but they were successful. In May 1992, the culture and communication center Lindenbrauerei was officially opened under the sponsorship of the non-profit association Lindenbrauerei, and the Lindenbrauerei, which had even been threatened with demolition in the meantime, finally found a new right to exist as a public place.

Today, the cultural center Lindenbrauerei is an event location and experimental field, think tank and meeting point for the so-called scene as well as for the "normal" citizens of Unna and the region around the city. Many associations, initiatives and individual artists meet regularly in the building, coordinate their activities, develop projects and present their work in the center. The range of events at the Lindenbrauerei corresponds to the social and cross-generational spectrum of the audience and is broad. The classic program categories such as cabaret & theater, concerts from pop to classic, exhibitions and readings are represented as well as children and youth culture work. There are events on current local and national topics, intercultural festivals, discos and parties.
