Tiger & Turtle—Magic Mountain
It is a game with dimensions and speed: "Tiger & Turtle - Magic Mountain" on the Heinrich-Hildebrand-Höhe has long since made a name for itself as the "roller coaster" of the Ruhr area. What may actually look like a fairground ride thanks to inclines, loops and looping, however, as a work of art and a sensational viewing platform and landmark, makes direct reference to the history of the location.
Named after the Duisburg local historian Heinrich Hildebrand, the relatively small heap with an area of around six hectares consists, among other things, of the slag material from the former zinc works MHD Sudamin. With their large sculpture "Tiger & Turtle - Magic Mountain" made of galvanized steel, the artist duo Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth consciously recall the industrial origins of landscape construction. The two Hamburgers have created an extraordinary landmark that is already impressive because of its size: 20 meters high, with a floor area of 40 by 41 meters, accessible up to a height of 13 meters - only the looping remains excluded. Since 2011, the unusual "roller coaster" has been enthroned on the former industrial wasteland embedded in the so-called Angerpark.
Photographers appreciate the large sculpture "Tiger & Turtle" as an unusual photo motif, especially at night when the work of art presents itself as a band of light on the horizon thanks to modern LED technology. During the day it offers strolling visitors a fascinating view of the industrial cultural landscape of the western Ruhr area and - depending on the direction of the bend - from a changing perspective. The plants of Hüttenwerke Krupp-Mannesmann (HKM) and other industrial companies are in the immediate vicinity.
