Boredom among children on holiday in the Ruhr area? Not on the Industrial Heritage Trail!
Many of our locations offer a wide range of activities for all ages. Along the route, there's plenty to discover and experience, such as the Zollverein factory swimming pool, the open-air cinema at Lapadu and Henrichshütte, holiday programs and family festivals at key points along the route, and numerous hands-on activities for a family day out.

July 05 & August 02
Family Sunday at the Nachtigall Coal Mine
Once a month, the LWL Museum Zeche Nachtigall invites families to a free, hands-on program on Family Sunday. From 11:00 am to 17:00 pm, you can experience exciting activities like blacksmithing, crafting, and a ride on the Muttentalbahn railway – all completely free of charge.
July 10st - August 23th
Outdoor summer cinema in the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park
The popular Stadtwerke open-air cinema will once again draw film and industrial heritage enthusiasts of all ages to the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park from July 10th to August 23rd. The program features exciting blockbusters, entertaining family films, and classic movies. Films such as Zootopia 2, Moana, and Spiderman will be shown.
July 18 - September 01
Factory swimming pool at Zollverein
A refreshing dip amidst a work of art: Where coal was once baked into coke, swimmers can cool off in the bright blue factory swimming pool starting Saturday, July 18, 2024. Throughout the summer holidays, one of Germany's most impressive swimming locations will be open daily from 12:00 to 20:00.
July 18 - September 06
DuisPool in Duisburg's inner harbor
Pack your swimwear and head to the inner harbor! From July 18th to September 6th, DuisPool invites you to swim for free in the harbor basin. Stroll through the lively inner harbor, enjoy delicious food, and, during the summer holidays, splash around in the water.
July 20th to 22nd & August 10th to 12th
Holiday workshops at the Centre for International Light Art
Two workshops at the Center for International Light Art in the Linden Brewery in Unna invite children and young people aged 10–14 to creative discoveries. Explore how light, colors, and shapes create moods and change feelings. Experiment with various materials such as LED lights, colored gels, paper cutouts, and your own body and movement.
July 21st - August 28th
Holiday program at the Hagen Open-Air Museum
At the LWL Open-Air Museum Hagen, you can participate in various hands-on activities and crafts on different, colorful days during the school holidays. Learn, for example, how to make paper, knot rope, or become an inventor! The grand finale will be a children's festival on the last Sunday of the holidays (August 30.08th).
July 29st - August 20th
Summer holiday program Zollern Colliery
Starting July 29th, children of primary school age can enjoy an exciting summer holiday program every Wednesday and Thursday at the LWL Museum Zeche Zollern. Experience adventures with the "Industrial Insects" or prove your strength, brains, and skill in mining!

Holiday cinema in the Henrichshütte
In addition to the open-air cinema at the Henrichshütte, the LWL Museum is hosting a children's holiday cinema event on August 26th at 15 pm. They will be showing Michael Ende's enchanting work "The Neverending Story," in which Bastian must save the land of fantasy. Admission is free.

Children's Day at the Bochum Railway Museum
On August 30th, the railway museum kicks off its summer holidays with a day full of activities and entertainment for the whole family. Younger guests are the focus and can look forward to numerous games and rides on historic vehicles.
