RevierRoute Circuit Day Trip
Starting point Gasometer Oberhausen
target point Gasometer Oberhausen

The district was known for its steel industry for a long time. Still today are
the blast furnaces and steel works of thyssenkrupp and HKM in Duisburg Europe
most important steel location. But this tour also leads to the legacies of the steel industry, important monuments such as the Gasometer Oberhausen or the Landscape Park Duisburg-Nord.

The starting location
The Oberhausen Gasometer serves as the starting point for this 47-kilometre-long RevierRoute. There are enough parking spaces on the CentrO site. You can use public transport to get to the Neue Mitte by bus or tram. Alternatively, Oberhausen main station with a direct long-distance connection is also not far away.

start of the tour
Not much is left of the huge Gutehoffnungshütte in Oberhausen. The CentrO Oberhausen was created as a shopping and leisure area from the derelict area of the former steel site. The mighty gasometer is the most striking building reminiscent of the old steel works. From the roof, visitors have a beautiful view of the western Ruhr area. Inside, temporary exhibitions attract visitors every year. (Attention: The Gasometer Oberhausen will be closed in 2020 for renovation work!)

On green paths to the former blast furnace works
From the Oberhausen Gasometer, the tour first leads over the Rhine-Herne Canal to the northern bank. The architecturally special bridge Slinky Springs to Fame and the nearby Oberhausen Castle with LUDWIGGALERIE and Kaisergarten are already worthwhile stopovers. The tour leads past the Rot-Weiss Oberhausen football stadium to the Emscher and the Green Path. This old railway line used to belong to the Emscher Valley Railway and was an important transport route for coal, ores and other goods between the industrial plants in the Ruhr area and the important transport ports on the Rhine. Well developed, the Green Path leads directly to the Landscape Park Duisburg-Nord.

When industrial culture shines in a new light
The former blast furnace plant was shut down in 1985 and expanded into an extraordinary sight as part of the International Building Exhibition IBA Emscher Park in the 90s. The highlight is the completely walk-in blast furnace 5. In the meantime, many other uses have settled in the closed blast furnace plant, from the diving gasometer to a climbing garden and the high-rope parkour. In the evening hours, the facility is illuminated by a light installation by the artist Jonathan Park.

The largest inland port in the world
From the Duisburg-Nord landscape park, the route leads via smaller city streets to the largest inland port in the world. Huge quantities of coal, iron ore and steel used to be handled here, but today container shipping is particularly important for the port. In Ruhrort, the German Inland Shipping Museum in particular offers interesting insights into the history of shipping.

Along the Rhine
The Rhine was one of the central transport routes for industry in the Ruhr area. Barges transported coal and ores between the North Sea and the Ruhr area. At junction 36, you can make a detour to the left bank of the Rhine to the Rheinpreussen heap and Geglüh. On the Alsumer Berg, it is worth going up the small heap with an exciting view of the coking plant and the steelworks on the Rhine.

The HOAG line
The bike tour leads back to Oberhausen via the HOAG route. This railway line was also a central freight connection between the port in Walsum and the collieries and steelworks in the western Ruhr area. Cyclists pass the disused Sterkrade colliery, of which only the head frame and the shaft hall remain. The last meters lead back to the starting point at the Oberhausen Gasometer.
