For more than 130 years, Zollverein's hard coal mining industry has shaped its surroundings - the impressive above-ground facilities of the mine and coking plant bear witness to this. However, the underground operations where most of the miners worked no longer exist. After coal mining ceased in 1986, the roads collapsed over time and the shafts were filled in.
Numerous original objects, installations and large-format film projections accompany this journey through the strange world of coal mining and provide information about the risks, consequences but also the opportunities with which the Zollverein miners from five generations have worked and lived.
This tour is suitable for people with limited mobility and people in wheelchairs.
