MYTH AND MODERNITY: FOOTBALL IN THE RUHR AREA
A photography exhibition by the German Football Museum and the Ruhr Museum from May 8, 2023 to February 4, 2024
"Land of 1.000 derbies" and "heart of German football": No other region in Germany is associated with football like the Revier. Football is a deeply rooted social and cultural phenomenon here, a way of life that is reminiscent of England, the motherland of football, in terms of tradition and expression.
One year before the 2024 European Football Championship kicks off in Germany, the German Football Museum and the Ruhr Museum are showing the first photographic special exhibition on football in the entire Ruhr area in the spectacular coal washing bunker at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein.
The exhibition
The exhibition is the first photographic special exhibition on the history of football in the Ruhr area. More than 450 classic football motifs that have never been shown before come from the large photo archive of the Ruhr Museum and from well-known photographers such as Andreas Gursky and Roland Wirtz, from well-known photo agencies and from the archives of the cities and clubs. The two epochs of myth and modernity are each presented and compared in eleven themes: attitude to life, on the pitch, district derbies, triumphs and tragedies, legends and idols, places of action, visit to the stadium, on ashes, on the sidelines, solidarity and commercialization.
Children on meadows with provisional gates in front of a derelict site, fans on their way to the stadium at the drinking hall - the interplay between people, landscape and regional landmarks creates an image in which nostalgia and current enthusiasm merge. Against this background, myth and modernity are not opposites, but create a lively kaleidoscope of football in the Ruhr area with the individual perspective of the viewer. In a side cabinet, the German Football Museum also shows highlight exhibits on the subject from its permanent exhibition, including Helmut Rahn's original jersey from the 1954 World Cup final.
