Ruhr Museum – special exhibition “Hands off the Ruhr area! The occupation of the Ruhr 1923–1925”

With over 200 exhibits, the gallery exhibition from January 12 to August 27, 2023 shows the experiences of the population and occupiers in the Ruhr during the crisis years 1923-1925, but also the emerging feeling of solidarity between Duisburg and Dortmund.

The occupation of the Ruhr is considered a central chapter in the history of the Ruhr area. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the occupation of the Ruhr, the Ruhr Museum is dedicating a gallery exhibition to everyday life in the occupation from 1923 to 1925. This was characterized by hyperinflation, violence, economic standstill and often bitter poverty. It shows the experiences of the population and the occupiers as well as the events of these crisis years in six chapters. In doing so, she also sheds light on the moment in history when the Ruhr area emerged as a unified region and important foundations were laid for the Ruhr Metropolis as an identification area.

With over 200 exhibits, the exhibition shows the experiences of the population and occupiers on the Ruhr during these years of crisis: photographs, rare film material, postcards, leaflets, posters, ID cards and numerous documents and memorabilia can be seen. Some particularly impressive exhibits come from major European museums such as the German Historical Museum in Berlin and the Royal Army Museum in Brussels.

The exhibition "Hands off the Ruhr area! The occupation of the Ruhr 1923-1925" looks at the exceptional situation that prevailed and shaped the Ruhr area 100 years ago from different perspectives.
