Steel making in the Siemens-Martin plant

PEOPLE AT WORK

The film shows work on a Siemens-Martin furnace in a Hoesch AG steel works in Dortmund.
In the Siemens-Martin process, pig iron is processed for the production of steel. Up to 40% of steel products worldwide were produced with this process in the 20s. The process was also ideal for recycling scrap. The last German Siemens-Martin furnace was shut down in 75.
The work in a Siemens-Martin plant is shown primarily from the perspective of the steel workers, who describe their work processes and the associated problems and dangers.
Great heat, extreme noise, dazzling from bright light, hazardous substances that are released, lack of oxygen when the furnace flaps are open represent enormous stress for the steelworkers. In addition, the fear of the impending loss of jobs in the 80s is also discussed. Hoesch AG was being restructured at that time and the cooperation with the Dutch company Koninklijke Hoogovens was terminated.

Hintergrund:

Today's DASA was founded by decree in 1980. Of course, the early exhibition planners at the Dortmund location had the topic of heavy industry on their agenda right from the start. In this context, the film was produced with its special perspective on working conditions. Unfortunately, it is not documented in which plant the film was shot.
